Potentiometer is a device used to compare the e.m.f. (electromotive force) of two cells, to measure the internal resistance of a cell, and potential difference across a resistor. It consists of a long wire of uniform cross-sectional area and of 10 m in length.

A thin coating of carbon composition element is deposited on pressed paper.

Terminals 1 and 3 are provided to two ends. The middle terminal 2 is connected to movable arm that contacts the resistor element by metal wiper.

when the shaft of the wiper is turned it makes a contact at different points on resistor element.
