The values expressed in the Preamble are expressed as objectives of the Constitution. These are: sovereignty, socialism, secularism, democracy, republican character of Indian State, justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, human dignity and the unity and integrity of the Nation.

It contains the philosophy on which the entire Constitution has been built. It provides a standard to examine and evaluate any law and action of government. The word 'Republic' in the Preamble indicates that India has an elected head, though indirectly elected, the Indian President is the choice of the people of India.
