What is precipitation
Answers
Answer:
Precipitation is a chemical process in which solid material is separated from a liquid
Answer:
The water which comes back to the surface of the earth in its various forms like rain, snow, hail, etc. is called precipitation. A major part of the precipitation occurs in the form of rain and a minor part of the precipitation occurs in the form of snow. Other forms of precipitation such as hail, sleet, mist, are very small and generally ignored.
In chemistry
Precipitation in chemistry is the formation of an insoluble compound when mixing two different solutions. The insoluble solid that is formed is called the precipitate.
For example, when a solution of sodium sulfate is mixed with a solution of barium chloride, a white, insoluble precipitate of barium sulfate is formed.
For another example, when a solution of sodium hydroxide is mixed with a solution of ferric nitrate, a rust colored insoluble precipitate of ferric hydroxide is formed.
Precipitates can be filtered out of the mixture and can be used to separate a specific element from a solution. Furthermore, the filtered precipitate can be dried, weighed and the quantity of the specific element determined.
