An atom consists of subatomic particles: 1) electrons which are negatively charged; 2) protons which are positively charged and 3) neutrons which have no charge.

An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus located in its center which is very small as compared to the size of atom. The nucleus contains protons and neutrons. So, the entire mass of the atom is concentrated in nucleus.

The electrons are present around the nucleus in circular paths called orbits. The electrons keep on moving in these orbits. Only certain discrete orbits of electrons are allowed inside the atom. The electrons do not radiate energy while revolving in the orbits.

While revolving in discrete orbits,

The orbits are called energy levels or shells and are represented by the letters K, L, M, N…, or the numbers n = 1, 2, 3, 4….etc.
