In ecology, productivity refers to the rate of generation of biomass in anecosystem. It is usually expressed in units of mass per unit surface (or volume) per unit time, for instance grams per square metre per day (g m−2 d−1). The mass unit may relate to dry matter or to the mass of carbon generated.

Productivity of an ecosystem is as follows:

  • In an ecosystem, the rate of generation of biomass is called productivity.
  • Units of mass per unit surface per unit time is the way of its expression.
  • Dry matter can be related with the mass unit.
  • In which rate, primary producers or plants sort energy as biomass.
  • In ecosystem, productivity is important because of its formation of foundation of food webs.
