Term 'Protoplasm' was first used/coined by JE Purkinje in 1839. He gave this term 'protoplasm for the fluid substance of a cell.

'Protoplasm' contains Cytoplasm & Nucleoplasm. In other words, everything inside cells except cell membrane. Protoplasm is composed of a mixture of small molecules such as ions, amino acids, monosaccharides, water and macromolecules such as nucleic acids, proteins, lipids & polysaccharides.
