The pulmonary circulation is the portion of the circulatory system which carries deoxygenated blood away from the right side of the heart (i.e. from the right ventricle), to the lungs, and returns oxygenated blood back to the left side of the heart (left atrium and ventricle).

The major role of pulmonary circulation is respiratory gas exchange. Therefore, to facilitate this role, pulmonary circulation is a low-pressure, high-flow system. Pulmonary circulation can accommodate any changes in blood flow due to relative passivity and the ability to recruit unperfused vessels.
