A polyatomic ion ( can be cation or anion) is generally referred to as radical or radical group. It is a group of two or more atoms covalently bonded, and having a charge either negative or positive on it. For example: nitrate (NO3-), ammonium (NH4+) are radical groups.

Radical word is also used for free radicals having an unpaired electron. For example: chlorine free radical (Cl.).
