What is Ratio ??

Consider a recipe for pancakes need 3 cups of flour and 2 cups milk. Then the ratio if flour to milk will be expressed in the following ways :

• Using the word 'to' 3 is to 2

• Using colon 3:2

In a ratio a : b , a is the first term or the antecedent and b is the second term or the consequent.

What is Proportion ??

Let there be 4 numbers = 12 , 15 , 16 and 20

Ratio of the first two numbers is 12 : 15 = 4 : 5 (simplest form)

Ratio of the third and forth numbers = 16 : 20 = 4 : 5 (simplest form)

We find here that the two ratios are equal. Such numbers with equal ratios are said to be in Proportion.

Thus an equivalence of two ratios is called Proportion and is presented as : :

A Proportion can be written in the following ways :

• As equivalent fractions${\tt{ \dfrac{1}{3} = \dfrac{2}{6}}}$

• As equivalent ratios 1:3 = 2:6

• 1 : 3 : : 2 : 6, where the 4 dots represent equivalence

Proportion is read as '1 is to 3 is to 2 is to 6'
