The reactivity series is where metals are arranged in the decreasing order of their reaction with other metals. If a metals is more reactive metal only then can it replace a metal which is less reactive. a metal cannot displace a lower reactive metal thus no reaction.

The arrangement of metals in vertical column in which highly reactive metals

are at the top and least reactive metals are at the bottom is called reactivity series of metals.

Reactivity series helps us to compare reactivity of different metals and also to predict the relative activities of various metals by telling us that which metal is more reactive , which is moderately reactive and which one is least reactive .

For example :- Among potassium , iron and platinum; potassium is placed at the top of the series which says that potassium is highly reactive metal, iron is placed in middle of the reactivity series which says that it is moderately reactive metal whereas platinum is placed at the bottom of the series which says that it is least reactive metal.

Hence, potassium is more reason than iron & platinum. Iron is more reactive than platinum but less reactive than potassium whereas platinum is less reactive than potassium & iron.

So, we can say that potassium can replace iron from it's compound, but iron can't replace potassium from it's compound and platinum can't replace potassium & iron from their compounds.

In this way we can compare the metals and predict their relative activities.
