The Plains are so fertile and are beneficial for agriculture. Therefore they are densely populated.
The mountains are sparsely populated because there is no facilities of basic necessities. Life is hard there.
Coastal regions are also not so much populated cause there is the fear of flood, tsunami, cyclone etc..
