What is redox reaction? Identify the substance oxidized and the substance reduced in the following reactions.
(i) CuO + H2→ Cu + H2O
(ii) MnO2 +4HCl → MnCl2 + Cl2+ 2H2O

The oxidation and Reduction reactions are called Redox Reaction.

Explanation:

Oxidation means addition of oxygen or removal of oxygen from a substance

Whereas,

Reduction means addition of hydrogen or removal of oxygen from a substance.

Oxidation and Reduction together are called Redox Reaction.

When one substance get oxidised then the other get reduced.

Now ,

I) CuO + H2 = Cu + H20

here ,

CuO is getting reduced to Cu (as you can see Oxygen is removed )

and ,

H2 is getting Oxidised ( as Oxygen is added )

ii) MnO2 +4HCL = MnCl2 +Cl2 +2H2O

here ,

MnO2 is getting reduced to MnCl2 (as it is lossing Oxygen )

and ,

HCL is Oxidised to form Cl2 (as it is losing hydrogen )
