Difference between Reflection and Refraction
Reflection Refraction
This phenomenon usually occurs in mirrors. This phenomenon usually occurs in Lenses.
Reflection can simply be defined as the refl ection of light when it strikes the medium on a plane. Refraction can be defined as the process of the shift of ligh t when it passes through a medium leading to the bending of light
- When any light changes its direction while traveling from one medium to another medium due to a change in its speed is known as REFRACTION.
For example: when you put a pencil in the transparent bucket, filled with water, you can observe that the pencil is bent rightward, it is due to the refractive index of water which slows the speed of light in water.
- When any light strikes on a smooth or shiny medium and bounces back to its original medium is known as REFLECTION.
For example: when you point a laser light on mirror, laser light reflects back at same angle due to the smooth and shiny surface of a mirror.
