The changing path of light (not bouncing back) of light through a transparent surface like water, glass, etc. is called refraction of light. When light enters a denser medium, its speed gets slower.
The refraction of light depends on the refractive index of the medium that is the strength to refract the rays of light. Denser the medium is, higher the refractive index of the medium.
