refractive index is basically the ratio of sin of angle of incidence of the first medium to the sin of angle of refraction of the second medium.


It can also be defined as the ratio of the speed of light in air to the speed of light in the given medium.

The third definition says refractive index is the ratio of the wavelength of the first medium to that of the second medium.

Refractive index differs in different mediums as the speed of light travelling in different mediums has different values..
