what is relationship between the electronic configuration of an element and its valency

The electronic configuration is the total no. of electron present in the outermost energy level/shell of any atom which also determins the valency as uts the number of electron present in the ooutermost shell distinguished by the element in which it is present ex.
electronic configuration of Na =
2,8,1
as the number of valence electron is also the last amount of electron in its outermost shell i.e.
valency=1
