ex:rama said "i am very busy now."
rama said that he was very busy then.

It means narrating the words of speaker. It is one of the speech , a part of indirect speech.For example-Sahil said that he was enjoying the Republic day parade.
in direct we say"I enjoyed the Republic day parade".
