Respiration is the biochemical process in which the cells of an organism obtain energy by combining oxygen and glucose, resulting in the release of carbon dioxide, water, and ATP (the currency of energy in cells). ... The chemical equation is C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O (glucose + oxygen -> carbon dioxide + water).

Respiration is the process of breaking down of food to release energy.

In cell, helps in the break down of food( glucose) to release energy. This kind of respiration is called aerobic respiration.

Glucose

in presence of oxygen>

Water + Carbon dioxide + Energy

Some times cell respire in the absence of oxygen to release energy. This kind of respiration is called anaerobic respiration.

Glucose

in absence of oxygen >

Alcohol + Carbon dioxide + Energy

hope it helps
