Respiratory Pigment.

Diffusion pressure alone cannot take care of oxygen delivery to all body parts in large sized animal. So, respiratory pigments take up oxygen from the air in the lungs and carry it to tissue. Haemoglobin is the respiratory pigment in human beings. It has very high affinity for oxygen and is present in RBCs (responsible for the colour of RBCs). CO2 being more soluble in water than O2 is mostly transported in the dissolved form in our blood.

A respiratory pigment is a metalloprotein that serves a variety of important functions, its main being O2 transport.

There are four major classifications of respiratory pigment: hemoglobin, hemocyanin, erythrocruorin–chlorocruorin, and hemerythrin.
