Roasting is a process in metallurgy in which a sulfide ore is heated in air. The process may convert a metal sulfide to a metal oxide or to a free metal.

The process by which sulphide ors are converted into oxides the heating them strongly (below their melting point) in presence of excess air or oxygen is known as Roasting.

\textbf{Example :}

2ZnS + 3O_{2} \xrightarrow{heat}2ZnO+2SO_{2}

Further the oxides formed are converted into pure metal by displacement reaction in which their oxides are reacted with more reactive metal to extract the pure metal.
In the above given Example, we can react Zinc Oxide formed with Carbon, to extract the pure metal.

\textbf{Example :}

ZnO + C \xrightarrow{}Zn + CO
