The Bombay Engineer Group, or the Bombay Sappers as informally known, is a regiment of the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army with its Centre in Kirkee, Pune. The Bombay Sappers draw their origin way back in the year 1777 when the British raised the company of Pioneer Lascars, comprising of 100 men, under Major Lawrence Nilson, the first Chief Engineer of the Bombay Presidency. 18 Field Company today is a direct descendant of this field company.

In 1840, the Sappers & Miners was amalgamated with the Pioneer Corps and was renamed as the Engineer Corps, which was referred to officially as the Corps of Bombay Sappers & Miners. In recognition of the prodigious contribution of The Bombay Sappers in World War I, the title ‘Royal’ was bestowed on the Corps in 1921. A mistaken interpretation of the historic records led to The Bombay Sappers being considered as junior in seniority to the Madras and Bengal Sappers, however historical links can be traced back showing The Bombay Sappers as the direct descendants of the first Pioneer Lashkars.
