Colchicine is a mitotic poison. It binds to tubulin, unit of microtubules which form the spindle apparatus in mitosis. Precisely, it arrests mitosis at metaphase.

It is a mitotic 'poison' but it is used to study chromosomes also. It is used to shut down mitosis in the mid of division that's metaphase where chromosomes can be studied best.

The most common adverse effect of colchicine is diarrhoea, due to its effects on rapidly proliferating gastrointestinal epithelial cells.
