Heya Mate,

Your Answer:

The citizens of Rome are clearly the most important characters of the play Julius Caesar. They form the mob, and have an important effect on both the audience and the characters in the play. The mob has a unlimited desire to passionately express their emotions. These emotions are communicated through various events throughout the play.

The first event is the celebration of the feast of the Lupercal, which is the citizens’ positive reaction to Caesar after his victory over the sons of Pompey. Their opposition to Pompey’s allies caused great disturbances in the streets as a short while before, Pompey was their hero. However, now with Caesar’s victory, he is the hero of the hour. Their response also influenced the idea that Caesar was becoming too ambitious. Thus, the citizens of Rome had a role in the fate of Julius Caesar.

During the funeral speech by Mark Antony, Brutus logically gives his reasons for killing Caesar. He says that he killed Caesar for he loved Rome and wanted to prevent tyrants from controlling her. The citizens cheer him for these words. However, when Antony gives his speech and passionately describes Caesar and the deeds he performed for the citizens of Rome, it contradicts the opinion of Brutus that Caesar was too ambitious. Antony, with his speech, cleverly leads the citizens to Caesar’s body and begins to show the brutal results of the assassination. He also influences the mob to believe that the conspirators are murderers and traitors. His speech and the reading of Caesar’s will overwhelms the people with grief, despair, and anger for their “beloved” Caesar’s death.

The citizens are important characters in the play, but they are also unreliable and fickle as they support the latest and most impassioned plea for their “ears.”
