The role of silica in the metallurgy of copper is to remove the iron oxide obtained during the process of roasting

The silica is used to react with the slug to separate the slug from the ore of copper
It is added to a ore which is basic in nature.

Eg: FeO + SiO2 ------> FeSiO3
(gangue) (silica) (calcium silicate)
