Roughage is basically edible fiber. It has the capacity to resist the enzymes of human digestive system. It helps in proper elimination of waste products.
examples are whole grains like oats and vegetables like carrot and cucumber.

Roughage:

Roughage is the ‘indigestible fire’ present in food that is cannot be acted upon by enzymes and is not digested or absorbed by the body. Roughage is also known as fibre or bulk.

This fibre in the food helps in the passage of ‘food and waste products’ through the gut. Eating fibre-rich food is associated with regular bowel movements, decreased risk of developing colon cancers.

Examples: nuts and seeds, raw fruits and vegetables.
