Explanation:

On the basis of his experiment, Rutherford put forward the model of an atom, which had the following features: There is a positively charged centre in an atom called the nucleus. Nearly all the mass of an atom resides in the nucleus. The electrons revolve around the nucleus in well-defined orbits.

Answer:

1) What is Rutherford's Experiment?

Rutherford conducted an experiment where he placed a radioactive element such as Polonium and Radium in a Lead(Pb) block and allowed its radiations to pass through a slit made in a positively charged plate. These radiations, after passing through the slit, were allowed to fall on a very thin gold foil.

He observed that -

° A majority of the radiations passed undeviated through the gold foil and their impression was obtained on a ZnS screen.

° A very small portion of the radiations deviated with very small angles.

° A very portion of the radiations were deviated with an angle of 180°.

2) Main features of rutherford's Gold Foil Experiment -

° He found that a major proportion of the atom is massless. All the mass of the atom is heavily present at its center.

° He also found that an atom contains a heavy and dense nucleus.

° A major proportion of the atom is chargeless.
