The Ryotwari system was first introduced by the Thomas Munro in the year 1820 in the areas of Madras, Assam, Bombay, Coorgh provinces of the then British India.

In this settlement the ownership rights of the land was handed over to the peasants.

And the government (British) use to collect the taxes directly from the peasants. This was the revenue system or tax collection system of the government.
