The word Sangam meansan assembly or a gathering. There were regular gatherings of poets and Scholars held from 100CE to 250CE in Madurai in Tamil Nadu. These were later compiled into different books. This literature known as the Sangam literature tells us about the society and culture of that period. During the period referred to as the Sangam age,there were three prosperous kingdoms in Tamil Nadu. They were the Cheras,the Cholas and the Pandyas. These kingdoms often waged wars against each other.
