Ethanoic acid reacts with alcohols in the presence of a conc. sulphuric acid to form esters. The ester, on treating with a base such as NaOH is converted back to alcohol and sodium salt of carboxylic acid.

CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH → CH3COONa + C2H5OH

mohdafsarsmart: both of them are correct , shruti it is not base , it is an alkali
mohdafsarsmart: it is an alkali
ankit8788: so what is difference between base and alkali
mohdafsarsmart: all base are alikali , but all alkali are not base
mohdafsarsmart: if u doubt check in google
ankit8788: ok
mohdafsarsmart: it doesn't mean that their answer is wrong , but i am correcting their mistake.

Esters can be cleaved back into a carboxylic acid and an alcohol by reaction with water and a base. The reaction is called a saponification.

CH3COOC2H5 + NaOH → CH3-COOH + CH3-CH2-OH

Hope it helped ❤️

mohdafsarsmart: naoh is an alkalai
