The Scholars Revolt of 1868 was an immediate revolt against French authority and spread of Christianity. It was started by outraged administrators at the imperial court. They planned a revolution in Ngu An and Ha Tien territories and destroyed nearly a thousand Catholics.

The principal aim of the scholar revolution was to prevent Catholic missionaries which were developing Christianity and transforming people's spirituality. Due to the expanse of Christianity French authority over Vietnam was expanding so the imperials of the court denied it which resulted in Scholars Revolt in 1868.
