The word petrology is derived from two Latin words Petra meaning rocks and logos meaning study, so the scientific study if rocks is called as petrology. Rocks are the masses of different particles that are accumulated together to form a solid mass.

Rocks are of basically three types: the igneous rocks which are formed after the cooling of the molten magma, the Sedimentary rocks which are formed when the sediments are present under high temperatures and pressure for thousands of years, and the metamorphic rocks which can he formed from either of these two rocks.

Rocks are essential for the survival of life on this planet. The soil on which the plants grow are formed due to the weathering of rocks. Also they are the source of several minerals that supports life on earth.
