It is due to the very fast vegetative propagation in the aquatic plant of Water hyacinth [ Eichhornia]. It is one of the most invasive weed found growing where there is standing water.

It drains Oxygen from the water of standing water bodies which result to the death of aquatic animals such as fishes. since it can propagate vegetatively at phenomenal rate and spread all over the water body in a short period of time, it is very difficult to get rid off from it.

In Bengal where fish industries is of great Importance, these please created havoc, hence known as "terror of Bengal"

It is interesting to know that this plant was introduces in India due to its beautiful flower and shape of leaves.
