The outer electron experiences two opposing forces
1. Force of attraction from nucleus.
2. Force of repulsion from inner electrons.
The decrease in the force of attraction exerted by the nucleus on the valency electrons due to the presence of electrons in inner shells, are called screening effect or shielding effect.
Note : The screening effect will increases if the number of electrons in the inner shells between the nucleus and outermost electron increases.
