ANSWER

This combined effect of attraction and repulsion force acting on the valence- electron, makes the electron experiences less attraction from the nucleus. This is called screening effect.

1] Force of attraction from nucleus.

2] Force of repulsion from inner electrons.

The decrease in the force of attraction exerted by the nucleus on the valency electrons due to the presence of electrons in the inner shells, is called the Screening Effect or Shielding Effect.
