Seed dormancy is a mechanism to prevent germination when adverse climatic conditions prevail mainly during low probability of seedling survival. A dormant seed is one that is unable to germinate in a particular period of time or specific environmental scenario.
Important function of the above discussed phenomenon is delayed germination this reduces germination of all seeds at the same time.
The factors responsible can be light , moisture, temperature, water , gases, mechanical restrictions, hormone structure and seed coat.

A dormant seed is one that is unable to germinate in a specified period of time under a combination of environmental factors that are normally suitable for the germination of the non-dormant seed. Dormancy is a mechanism to prevent germination during unsuitable ecological conditions, when the probability of seedling survival is low.

Seed dormancy is defined as a state in which seeds are prevented from germinating even under environmental conditions normally favorable for germination.  These conditions are a complex combination of water, light, temperature, gasses, mechanical restrictions, seed coats, and hormone structures.
In the sprouting industry, dormancy is commonly referred to as a seed producing plants ability to withstand winter freezes.  The more dormant or “Winter Hardy”, a seed producing plant is, the further north (in northern climates) it can grow and still survive the winter to come up the following season.
