The deriving and processing of wool involve five main steps. They are as follows:

  1. Shearing
  2. Grading or sorting
  3. Washing or scouting
  4. Carding
  5. Spinning
  • Shearing: Sheep shearing is the method by which the woolen fleece or coat of a sheep is cut or shaved off. The person who removes the sheep's coat of wool is called a shearer. Once a sheep develops a thick fleece of hair, it is cut off to obtain wool. The process of shaving off this woolen fleece of sheep along with a thin layer of skin is called shearing.
  • Carding: It is a mechanical process that detangles, clears and intermixes fibers to produce a sliver suitable for subsequent process or a continuous web that can be laid out into batting. In preparing wool fiber for spinning, carding is the step that comes after scouting.
