The Silk Road, the collective name for the trade routes spanning from Europe to Asia, through Byzantium, was instrumental to globalization of many cultures, along with the economical growth of many empires in both continents. the Silk Road was not always a good thing, however. Opened trade, and an abundance of traders along the world, lead to an influx in rat populations along the routes. As you probably know, rats carry certain diseases, and during the time, the bubonic plague lead to be deaths of millions of Europeans. This disease was carried by rats, which were carried by the merchants that traveled the route.
