These ratios are constant for all right angled triangles.

For a right angled triangle the longest side is called hypotenuse

So
sine = side opposite to the angle / hypotenuse

cosine = side adjacent to the angle / hypotenuse

tangent = side opposite to the angle / side adjacent to the angle
