The slenderness ratio of a column gives an indication of buckling failure in the column. More the slenderness ratio, more is the tendency of column to fail by buckling effect in that direction.

The slenderness ratio is taken in different directions but the direction in which the moment of inertia is minimum gives maximum slenderness ratio as the radius of gyration will be minimum in such case.
