Semi-solids such as faeces that settle down during wastewater treatment are calledsludge. This sludge is removed using a scraper and then transferred to a tank where it is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria to produce biogas.

Sludge is the semi-solid slurry that is obtained during water treatment.

  • Sludge is extracted during the treatment of waste water by the process of filtration.
  • During primary treatment, the solid waste that settles down form the primary sludge. The remaining effluent is later taken for secondary treatment.
  • Here, most biological waste is removed by bacterial flocs. These flocs are later removed by sedimentation and the clean water is released into water bodies.
