Soaps are sodium and potassium salts of long chain fatty acids while detergents are sodium salts of long chain benzene sulphonic acid or alkyl hydrogen sulphate.
Detergents are stronger than soaps because unlike soaps, synthetic detergents can be used in hard water which is because calcium and magnesium salts of detergents, like the sodium or potassium salts, are soluble in water.
