Soil conservation is the prevention of loss of the top most layer of the soil from erosion or any other possible case by which the uppermost layer of the soil van be harmed. Some of these examples are like prevention of reduced fertility caused by over usage, acidification or other chemical soil contamination.

Unsustainable methods of subsistence farming are practiced to give less harm to topmost layer of the soil. Like these, many other methods are also practiced for the same. It is done for the safety of agriculture.
