The main principle is to minimise water loss, and conserve soil structure. Slowing water-flow/runoff with contour levees, logs, rocks and small dams along streams, helps, etc.

Arid and semi arid soils can be protected by mulching

Mulching is nothing but cover the soil with with solid deposits. There are many mulches based on nature and texture. The best one is organic which is very widely available and costs less. Organic mulch is nothing but dry leafs and thick organic waste such as vegetable wastes.

The other best way of conserving soil is by cover crops. It is nothing but growing creepers.
