When the top layer of the soil, also called horizon A gets washed away due to storms, floods etc it is known as soil erosion which occurs due to decrease in number of trees from soil, the roots of the trees holds the soil, but when there is no tree, the soil gets washed away.

Soil erosion is the displacement of the upper layer of soil, one form of soil degradation. This natural process is caused by the dynamic activity of erosive agents, that is, water, ice (glaciers), snow, air (wind), plants, animals, and humans.
