The answer to your question is quite simple:


If a Conducting wire is wound in the form of a cylindrical coil whose diameter is less in comparison to its length, the coil is called a solenoid. It looks like a helical spring. A solenoid behaves as a bar magnet. It continues to behave as a bar magnet as long as current passes through it. As the current is switched off, it does not behave pike a magnet. The magnetic field lines are similar to that of a bar magnet and can be increased by inserting a soft iron core in it.
