The one present in less quantity in a solution is solute and the fluid medium in which that "less quantity" is dissolves is the solvent. Water is a universal solvent.
As far as the trick is concerned, just take up any example and relate it to practical life utility. GENERALLY, solvent is liquid and solute is solid, but there are cases where both if them can be Solids, for example gemstone. Or where both of them as liquid, like Vinegar, which is a solution of 5% acetic acid in water. There are also the cases where both if them are gases, like Hydrogen chloride gas.
GODSPEED.
