  • Answer: The process of fusion of protoplast of somatic cells derived from different varieties and or species of plants on a suitable nutrient medium to produce the somatic hybrids is called somatic hybridization. For example pomato is the somatic hybrid obtained by the protoplast fusion of tomato and potato.

Somatic hybridization:

  • Somatic hybridization is the technique which is used to manipulate the genome of a cell by the process of protoplast fusion.
  • Somatic hybridization is a novel technique that allows the fusion of two different plants so as to obtain a new hybrid plant which has characteristics of both plants.
  • Since the protoplast is devoid of a cell wall therefore the fusion of protoplasts becomes very easy without facing any barriers, while the process of fusing the two genomes.
  • The fusion of protoplast can be done using three methods mechanical fusion, spontaneous fusion and induced fusion.
  • An example of a somatic hybridization in plants is Pomato the somatic hybrid obtained by the fusion of protoplast of tomato and potato.
