Heyaaa..

# The abbreviation of SONAR can be given as SOund Navigation And Ranging...

# SONAR is a device that uses ultrasonic waves to measure the distance, direction and speed of underwater objects...

# SONAR consists of a tranmittor and a detector which is installed in a boat as shown in the attached figure..

=> Now lets see how it works .....

* The transmittor produces and transmitts ultrasonic waves.

* These waves travel through water and after striking the object under water , it gets reflected back and then sensed by the detector...

* The detector converts the ultrasonic signals into electronic signals which are then interpreted...

* The distance of the object under the water can be known by knowing the speed of the sound wave in water and time interval between the transmission and reception of the ultrasound...

=> Lets now see the formula for calculation of the distance..

Let the time interval between the transmission and reception be t and the speed of sound in water be v ....

 So the total distance travelled by the ultrasound can be given as...

                       2d = v × t

* This method is called as Echo - ranging...

Hope it helps ...

The working of SONAR technique is based on the fact that time taken by ultrasonic sound from the source to an obstacle is equal to the time taken by the reflected sound (echo) from that obstacle is to the source of sound.

The time taken is then used to calculate the distance between the source of sound and the obstacle.
