Sonar (originally an acronym for sound navigation ranging) is a technique that uses sound propagation (usually underwater, as in submarine navigation) to navigate, communicate with or detect objects on or under the surface of the water, such as other vessels.

The full form of SONAR is Sound Navigation And Ranging.

It is a technique that uses sound waves to map or locate objects in the surroundings...

APPLICATIONS OF SONAR:

Submarines use sonar to detect other vessels.

Sonar is also used to measure the depth of water.

Oceanographers(People who study of the physical and biological aspects of the ocean) use sonar to map the contours of the ocean floor.

It is also used for searching for oil on land. A sonar pulse is sent into the ground. Echoes come back from the different layers of soil and rock and tell geologists what kinds of soils and rocks are present. This helps them identify areas for drilling that are most likely to contain oil or gas.
