in sooty flame you are able to see black unburnt carbon particle and it burns with yellow flame due to incomplete combustion.

whereas in non sooty flame no black particles are formed and it burns with clean blue flame. generally saturated carbons give blue flame aand unsaturated carbons give yellow sooty flame
